If you’re not sure what kind of sensor your EOS has, then you can check it out on Astro Photography Tool’s “Canon EOS models matrix“. It can also sync a camera clock to your PC’s clock.” “…allows you to read a shutter counter from a Canon EOS DSLR (DIGIC III and later) camera. The utility is free and will work on most EOS models. Mac users can utilize this version, and the newer version, EOSInfo, is currently only for Windows users. There’s no tool that works seamlessly for all EOS models, let alone on both Windows and Mac platforms. Interestingly, there’s no official Canon based application to find the shutter count for an EOS DSLR, however, there are a few free online tools that may help you to do this. There you can find out the average life expectancy for your EOS model(s). In fact, the Camera Shutter Life Expectancy Database is a really neat user-based site for DSLR models of several brands, including Canon. Typically this count is between 100,000 and 300,000 shutter actuations, with the latter limit associated with the EOS-1D models. Usually, you’ll have to take a couple hundred thousand photos before this happens though, and Canon has allegedly released a particular shutter actuation threshold to indicate the number of shots expected for each EOS model before the shutter fails. At this point, you may either need to have the shutter replaced or purchase a new camera. Sooner or later, your DSLR’s shutter will wear, slow down and eventually stop functioning. Just as with any piece of mechanical equipment, a camera has a lifetime that is based on the number of shutter actuations otherwise known as shutter clicks or the shutter count. Please note, however, that I will only cover “still” part of Magic Lantern as I’m not really interested in video recording.Shutter Count Number is important – A DSLR’s shutter will eventually fail If there are any particular features that you would like to see covered, just let me know (eg.

If you’re interested about Magic Lantern, you can learn more from my recent post.Īs I’m writing about Magic Lantern again I would like to mention that I plan a whole series of tutorials about using Magic Lantern (because I was asked by some of my readers to do that). I think we will see working version in a few days from now. Apparently a few things don’t work at the moment but the progress they’re making is really impressive. However, it looks like Magic Lantern team finally started to work on supporting most recent firmware and if you’re interested in the progress, you can track it here.

As a software developer I can tell you that it’s sometimes better to stick to an older version of firmware/library because supporting new version might require a lot of changes and also might break existing functionality. Unfortunately adding support for new firmware version is not as simple as it might sound (and it sounds really simple). And as Canon introduced quite a few fixes since 1.1.3 for many it was a reason to wait for 1.2.3 support in Magic Lantern.

I personally know quite a few photographers who hesitated to install Magic Lantern on their Canon 5D MK III just for a single reason – it required them to downgrade 5D firmware to version 1.1.3 while the latest one is 1.2.3.
